Manuscript Evaluation

Manuscript evaluations, like developmental edits, explore the "big picture" view of a manuscript. It's a high-level evaluation of the structure, story, pacing, character arcs, and style of the completed (or near-completed) manuscript to analyze whether your work needs a developmental editor, or if you could begin with a line or copyeditor.

Find out what direction your manuscript needs in this short, broad, analysis.

How it works

2.

When you hire me, you’ll send me your manuscript and I’ll do 2 passes before returning your manuscript.

3.

I’ll send you a manuscript analysis with broad suggestions on changes that would have the most impact in improving the strength of your manuscript.

4.

We will also hold a 1-hour video chat for any questions you might have, discussions or suggestions you’d like, or anything you’d like to talk about.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Think of a manuscript evaluation (ME) as an appetizer & a developmental edit (DE) as an entire meal. The ME gives you sample, broad strokes to think about, where the DE gives you highly detailed specifics.

  • Manuscript evaluations take less time to complete than developmental edits. Times still vary depending on the length of the manuscript and should be discussed with the editor, but the turnaround time will be faster.

  • No. Your story should be roughly 75% completed before booking with me (especially if it is a mystery novel) but manuscript evaluations can be done on stories that are not 100% complete if needed.

  • We can still talk about working together. Not every genre or book needs a specialist, sometimes that’s up to you as the author to decide. And if we agree I’m not the right person for the job, I may be able to suggest someone who does work in your genre.

  • Use a standard Times New Roman font, 12 point type, double spaced with 1-inch margins. I can accept your manuscript as a Microsoft Word document or Google Docs attached to your email. If you don’t have this program, please let me know and we’ll see what alternatives work for both of us.

  • No. I’m afraid that is outside the scope of what I do. Instead, I will do my best to help you get your manuscript in the best shape it can be for your next step towards getting published.

  • Yes! When your book is ready to be published, let me know! Send me a jpeg of the cover, photos or your launch party, etc. While I won’t promote it as extensively as you will, I will definitely help spread the word.

  • If you know you’re going to want multiple services, we can definitely talk about bundle plans or payment packages, depending on what you would like.
